Beauty

What is beauty?
Photograph by Lara Jade Coton

Beauty to me is a combination of natural elements, color, shape and form that pleases the eye. Beauty is an opinion which is different for each and every different person.

Commercial vs. Artistic

Artistic: I chose this as my artistic portrait because it is not a traditional pose or background for a commercial photograph. I like how porcelain her face looks but also the contrast of her bright blue nails and blue eyes with the natural landscape as the background.
Magazine: I think that this picture in this magazine cover is commercial because the child in the portrait is very put together and posed. The toddlers outfit seems well planned out and almost unrealistic with the bow tie and lollipop. When I took this photo, I told him how to pose versus the artistic, I was just taking pictures as she moved, was relaxed and with no direction.

Portraits

This is a classic portrait of Cyrus. This photograph is a close up, head and shoulders shot. The lighting is classic and nothing dramatic. I like this photo because of his happy expression which shows his personality and I like that the photo was taken from above, with him laying in the grass. The natural lighting is very beautiful.
This is a classic portrait. I like this photo and think it is one of my best because of the contrast between the light and the dark hair but also with the unity of the blue eyes and black and blue clothing. The hair creates beautiful texture against the plain black background

This is a group portrait with three people. This was taken in the sky bridge at Pioneer Square Mall. I arranged them in this order in correlation with angles of the bridge closing in. This has unity because they are all eating frozen yogurt but is different because of the different expression on their faces.
This is a portrait of Emma taken behind the projector. I love this photo because of the vibrant colors and interesting design. It is a classic portrait of Emma but also very different and innovative with the colorful overlay.

Light and Shadow

Back Lighting-silhouette
To get Katie as the subject and silhouette, I metered on the background, the light blue sky, making katie very dark. This created a silhouette as she flipped her hair in the air.

Back Lighting-subject lit up

This exhibits back lighting with the subject lit up as I metered on Katie instead of the background, creating a white, very over exposed background.

Chiaroscuro
Definition of Chiaroscuro: the arrangement or treatment of light and dark parts in a pictorial work of art
I chose this picture for my chiaroscuro  because of the black and white balance. The focus is on the shadow of the light post and you can see the natural light creating the shadow.

Shadows as subject
This shows shadows as the subject because of the lighting from behind the subjects, the person and the tree trunk and branches. I chose this one specifically because of the green moss on the concrete, contrasting with the brick.

Reflections as subject
This is a reflection of a building in another building across the street. The sky was very blue and beautiful on this particular day and you can see this in the reflection.

HDR & Panorama

I chose to do a HDR with this photo because of the lighting during the day. With the grey sky, some areas were very dark and grey, making it very under exposed and because of the grey sky, it was over exposed The HDR compilation shows the blue sky and white clouds and the inside of the painted walkway can now be seen.

I chose to take my panorama in the class room because I thought that there was a lot going on and that the identical computers would look interesting if placed at different angles. I decided that it would be a little boring if there was no main subject, or nothing appealing to the eye so I decided to ask Katie to be my model.

Motion Assignment

Panning
This photo was a self portrait taken in a Downtown parking garage. This shows panning because as I held the camera and spun around, I focused on my face, creating a blurry background showing the motion. This is not a very flattering photo but I think that the idea is cool, with a very focused foreground and moving background.

Moving Subject
This photo is of Katie running down the pavement. She was wearing a red sweatshirt which created the red, diagonal blur line. This was taken with a very slow shutter speed on a tripod. You can see the movement with faint blur of her arms and bright red sweatshirt against the focused mural background.

Freeze Action
This photo of Kendra was taken downtown. Using a fast shutter speed, I captured Kendra jumping in the air. You can tell that she is in motion because she is in the air and her hair is flying up.
Camera Shake/ Total Motion
This was taken outside, behind the school. I had Katie move back and forth as I shook the camera side to side. This shows total motion because the bus is moving as well as Katie. You can see the white car and bus moving in the background and the outline of Katie's face and lips.

Diptych & Triptych

This diptych is of a tangled up hose. I like the turquoise blue and the different formation the hose has made against the patterned tiled floor.
This triptych was taken in Palm Springs at the Hideaway Golf Course for my cousin's wedding. This represents different stages in marriage and that's why I think it is very interesting.

Shape Assignment

GEOMETRIC SHAPE
This photo was taken on the walking field trip Downtown portland. I love this photograph and think it shows geometric shape very well because of the subject of the photo, the dark circle. There is a lot of detail within the certer of the circular drinking fountain and I think this adds an interesting element to the simple circle.

RADIAL BALANCE
This is a photo of a dead flower. I edited this photo to boost the red tones so that the red really pops out. This photo has radial balance because it radiates at the center of the photo, outwards. I think that this is a neat photo because of how much detail in the center of the photo, and the background is blurred out.

SYMMETRICAL
This photo was taken in Palm Springs this fall. This palm tree is nearly symmetrical, identical on both sides. The sunset created backlight, making the palm tree black. I like this picture because the light to dark contrast.

ASYMMETRICAL

This is a photo of a sculpture outside of the Portland Art Museum. This is asymmetrical because this part of the sculpture does not have symmetry, meaning it is not the same split in half. I like this angle of this photo, being able to see the blue sky and clounds in the background

ORGANIC SHAPE
This was taken at the Ira Keller Fountain Downtown Portland. This is of a deformity on a tree. This deformity has made a really interesting, organic shape with many different divets and grooves along with the color variation from age and sap.
